November 4, 2021 | Protect Yourself and Your Data

Girl in Yellow Sweater on ComputerSun East is committed to protecting our members from fraud and scam events. Follow these tips below to protect your accounts and information, and for more security tips, visit https://www.cisa.gov/stopransomware.

Be Aware of Scams

Don’t Fall for a Fake

Imposters can come in all different shapes and sizes and may appear as your financial institution, phone company, family member, or even a government agency.

Don’t Let Them Pressure You

Fraudsters use pressure tactics to create a false sense of urgency. They may tell you they will disconnect your electricity, that your benefits will be discontinued, or that you have credited money to your phone account.

Don’t Reveal Sensitive Personal Information

Sun East will never call you and then ask you for your one-time verification code, PIN, password, or other personal identification details. If something feels strange,  hang up immediately.

Go to the Source

Confirm who you are dealing with by calling the number on the back of your card or use a trusted number on the company website. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Also beware of
anyone promising you high returns, low risk, and “golden” opportunities.

Avoid Grandparent Scams

If someone claims to be a family member, verify with that family member by calling them directly. If you think your grandchild needs help, get in touch with them directly, not by email, social media, or
text. Always call their parents before sending money unintentionally to a potential scammer.

Traditional Passwords Aren’t Secure Enough

Use the strongest authentication options provided everywhere they are offered, especially with banks, phone, and email providers. If you are on a shared or public device, you should not save passwords
or login details.

Never Share Your Passwords or PIN

Keep your passwords and PINs a secret, even from close friends, family, and teammates. It is never a good idea to share your login information.

Be Alert

Never send money to someone you don’t know in real life, especially using gift cards or a third-party payment app like Zelle®, Cash App, PayPal, Venmo, etc.

Think Twice Before Clicking on a Link

Remember to only click on familiar links to access business sites online, and confirm requests before automatically downloading apps to fix site issues.

Report Suspicious Activity

Sun East emails include a Security Zone box in the footer with a personalized stamp, your name, and the last four digits of your primary phone number. Monitor your accounts regularly, respond to fraud alerts and report unauthorized transactions promptly. Call our contact center at 610-485-2960 to report any suspicious emails, calls, texts, etc.

Don’t forget, if you’d like more information on Cybersecurity, visit https://www.cisa.gov/stopransomware.

November 1, 2021 | Check Fraud & Mail Theft Alert

Please Be Aware of Check Fraud and Mail Theft in Your Area

The Aston, PA Police Department recently announced that there is increased fraudulent activity regarding mail theft and check fraud. As a valued part of our Member family, we want to make sure you are aware of this, and here are a few easy steps you can take to protect yourself and your savings:

  • Consider using Sun East Bill Pay or Loan Pay services available to you within the Mobile App, your online banking portal, or Automated-Bank-by-Phone at (610) 485-6800.
  • When including physical checks in any mailed pieces, go to the post office and physically mail your envelope INSIDE the post office location, rather than using the blue mailboxes in public areas.
  • Confirm that any recent checks mailed, and cashed, were received by the intended recipients.

If you suspect your account with Sun East has been breached as a result of the recent mail theft, please contact member services at memberservice@suneast.org or call (610) 485-2960.

Let’s all be vigilant together!

October 14, 2021 | Your Action is Needed: Tell Congress to Oppose New IRS Reporting Provisions

email header

Your action is needed to tell congress to oppose new IRS reporting provisions.

What You Need To Know:

IRS Reporting to be Included in Budget Reconciliation Bill

Recently, Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated IRS reporting requirements for credit union and bank accounts will stay in the reconciliation bill despite public concerns. The proposal will require financial institutions, including credit unions, to report information on any account with $600 of total activity over the course of a year. The proposal will give the IRS the inflows and outflows of basically every credit union and bank account in the United States.

Speaker indicated the dollar amount of reporting requirement may change, however.

What This Means To You:

This proposal would violate consumers’ personal privacy by forcing credit unions and banks to provide the government with information that does not reflect taxable activity.

Time is running out to prevent this action from being adopted. To oppose this reporting provision, and protect your privacy, please go to the Credit Union National Association Grassroots Action Center and select “Tell Congress to Oppose New IRS Reporting Provisions” and follow the prompts.

Be heard

Thank you for being a valued Sun East Member.

April 7, 2020 | A Message from the CEO

A message from the CEO

To All Sun East Members:

Each morning on my drive to work, I contemplate the effect the COVID-19 crisis has had on our families, businesses and local communities. I see the empty parking lots, darkened store fronts, deserted streets, “take-out only” and social distancing reminder signs, and I’m heart broken. I hurt for all of our friends, neighbors and family members who’ve lost jobs, who are sequestered in their homes and who remain uncertain of what tomorrow will bring.

But then a story on the radio reminds me of how our first responders continue to put themselves in harm’s way to provide aid to those who are sick, how grocery store employees continue to show up day after day to restock the shelves, how pharmacies are delivering prescriptions to our seniors in an effort to minimize their risk of exposure, and how so many people are donating to charitable organizations in their greatest time of need.

It’s at that point I think about how resilient, how dedicated and how committed we are as a nation to helping and supporting each other through good times and difficult times. For me, this has never been more evident than when I see my own Sun East teammates upholding the Credit Union Movement’s founding philosophy of People Helping People, day in and day out.

The Sun East team continues to provide vital financial services to members by phone from remote workspaces; through drive-thru lanes; at our Mobile Branch Unit; through remote banking channels like online and mobile; and through Member Assistance Options like fee waivers, payment deferrals, and low-rate relief loans for those who’ve experienced job interruptions or diminished hours.

We’re also an approved SBA lender. We stand ready to help small business owners overcome the unique challenges created by this health crisis with multiple funding options such as the Paycheck Protection Program, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan Emergency Advance, and SBA Express Bridge Loans. Email Ken Lawrence, Sun East’s Business Relationship Manager, for details.

We’ve been here for you over the last 71 years; we’re here for you now, and we’ll continue to be here for you tomorrow! Regardless of whether we’re working remote, processing transactions at a drive-thru, or helping you on the phone; we will continue to serve while taking the recommended precautions to protect the health of our members, employees, and volunteers.

In an effort to prevent further spread of COVID-19, I encourage you to stay home and stay connected with Sun East’s digital banking tools. You can enroll in online banking; or download our mobile banking app from the App Store or Google Play, and gain access to a variety of services right at your fingertips:

  • Transfer funds
  • Pay Bills
  • Make Loan Payments
  • View your statements
  • Skip A Qualified Payment
  • Review Account History
  • Submit a Stop Payment Form
  • Deposit Checks on a web-enabled device, by simply taking a photo; and we’ve increased daily and monthly deposit limits.

We’ll continue to monitor the ongoing health crisis and bring you updates as necessary. Please take care, be well, and thank you for being a part of the Sun East family!

Sincerely,
Michael J. Kaczenski

BEWARE OF CORONAVIRUS SCAMS

Scammers often take advantage of natural disasters, outbreaks and other challenging events, to sell bogus products, and trick you out of your money. They might promote coronavirus awareness and prevention tips, or offer fake information about cases in other states. They might also ask you to donate to victims, give advice on unproven treatments or send malicious email attachments. Sun East will never call or email you and ask for personal information such as credit card numbers, account numbers, or PINs.

Here are some tips from the Federal Trade Commission to help keep you safe from scammers:

  • Don’t click on links from sources you don’t know.
  • Watch for emails claiming to be from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or experts saying that have information about the virus.
  • Ignore online offers for vaccinations.
  • Do your homework when it comes to donations, whether through charities or crowdfunding sites. Don’t let anyone rush you.
  • Be skeptical of “investment opportunities” relating to coronavirus.
