March 16, 2023 | Important Member Updates for Sun East Members

Sun East would like to thank our member-owners for your trust and ongoing support, as well as your feedback on our previous communications regarding the safety and soundness of your credit union in the wake of this week’s banking crisis.

Through your feedback, we learned many of you were unaware that deposits at Sun East are insured for up to $500,000 versus the standard $250,000 at many other institutions; and, that you’d like more frequent reminders of benefits like that. We also heard that many of you were surprised, but very pleased to hear that credit union members have never lost a penny of insured savings at a federally insured credit union, like Sun East.

We appreciate your honest insights and your genuine desire to understand more about your member benefits; especially the security tools that come with your Sun East membership.

Many fraudsters will be looking to gain access to non-public, personal information as they exploit the recent banking crisis for their own monetary benefit, so here are some tools and tips you can use right away to help protect your accounts and personal information:

  • Account Alerts – you can customize the type of alerts you get when there’s activity on your Sun East share savings or share draft checking account and alerts can be sent directly to your cell phone or email.
    https://apps.suneast.org/onlinebanking/
  • SecurLOCK Equip – our mobile app solution gives you a simple and secure way to manage and monitor your debit and credit card activity, customized by you and easily downloaded via the App Store or Google Play.
  • eStatements – anyone can grab paper statements out of your mailbox; enroll in eStatements directly in online or mobile banking. You’ll get your monthly statements up to 3 days earlier and you’ll be able to access them at your fingertips.
    https://apps.suneast.org/onlinebanking/
  • Authentic emails from Sun East will include a Security Zone box in the footer.
  • Sun East will never call you and then ask you for your one-time verification code, PIN, password, or other personal identification details; if something feels strange, hang up immediately and contact us directly at 610-485-2960.
  • Sun East will never use pressure tactics to create a false sense of urgency; don’t let anyone pressure you into anything, especially giving out account information, unless you go directly to the source to verify the request is legitimate.
  • Beware of scammers who will likely attempt to contact those affected by the recent bank collapses, under the guise of offering support, legal services, loans, or reimbursements.
  • Beware of cryptocurrency scams falsely claiming that SVB is reimbursing its customers with USDC pay-outs.
  • If you receive an email requesting a wire transfer (involving SVB or any other financial institution), always verify the party requesting it by using a phone number obtained from a reliable source, such as the company’s official website or previously authenticated correspondence.

During this heightened period of potential fraud from external sources, we encourage you to be vigilant, ask questions, and deploy all the account protection tools at your disposal. If you should need assistance downloading an app or enrolling in a service, we’re here for you; you can live chat us online during normal business hours, stop by a branch in DE or PA, give us a call at 610-485-2960, follow us on social @SunEastFCU, or even set up a no-obligation consultation with one of our Sun East Retirement and Investment financial professionals.

We know you have many choices in financial institutions, so we’re honored that you continue to choose Sun East, now, and over the last 74 years; and, we’ll keep doing what it takes to ensure you have a stable, well-managed, fiscally responsible partner for the years to come!

March 13, 2023 | Important Member Updates for Sun East Members

In the wake of last week’s collapse of Silicon Valley Bank (SVB), fueled by a capital crisis, and the voluntary liquidation of Silvergate Bank, due to the erosion of trust in the crypto-currency market; Sun East would like to remind our member-owners how your funds are protected.

Sun East’s Supervisory Committee, Board of Directors, management team, and federal regulators, are diligent in providing the protection and oversight needed to ensure a well-managed, well-capitalized credit union for our member-owners through these major initiatives:

  • Insuring deposits for up to $500,000 through the combination of a government-backed insurance fund, as well as insurance from a private carrier for added protection.
  • Participating in regular financial audits conducted by NCUA (National Credit Union Administration), a government agency charged with regulating all federal credit unions.
  • Engaging independent audit and accounting firms to ensure the Board of Directors and management team meet the required reporting objectives and have sufficient procedures to safeguard members’ assets.

To elaborate on how your funds are insured at Sun East: deposits (like savings, checking, money markets, IRAs, and certificates) are insured for a total of up to $500,000; with up to $250,000 insured by NCUA (National Credit Union Administration), a government agency, through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund. And, as a member-owner benefit, Sun East also provides up to an additional $250,000 in coverage through ESI (Excess Share Insurance), which is not a government agency, but a licensed property and casualty insurer.

Per the NCUA, the agency that regulates federal credit unions like Sun East:

“Credit union members have never lost a penny of insured savings at a federally insured credit union. Additional information on NCUA share insurance coverage for consumers is available at https://mycreditunion.gov/share-insurance.”

NCUA not only performs ongoing audits of the credit union to ensure its safety and soundness, but they also mandate that each year, Sun East’s Supervisory Committee engages an independent public accounting firm to audit and report on its annual financial statements and condition. In addition, Sun East enlists the services of Accume Partners as an independent auditor to further assure that Sun East follows and meets all the Credit Union’s policies and procedures. The result of these audits continues to prove that Sun East is well managed, financially strong, and operating under the highest of standards.

Sun East employees and board/committee volunteers also engage in annual, required training to ensure they understand the regulatory and compliance requirements mandated by NCUA. The credit union’s senior management team, Supervisory Committee and the Board of Directors meet regularly to review the financial condition of the credit union, and make any necessary adjustments based on fluctuating economic factors such as inflation and federal rate changes.

In April each year, the credit union holds an Annual Meeting where member-owners can address any concerns or ask questions related to credit-union performance, directly with the President and CEO, and the Board of Directors.

This combination of protection through federal and private deposit insurance coverage, ongoing internal and external audits, ongoing communications with member-owners, and operations oversight by the Board of Directors; has assured Sun East’s safety and soundness for the past 74 years and will continue to provide financial stability for our member-owners in the coming years.

Rest assured, we will remain vigilant in honoring the trust our member-owners, like you, have placed in us by continuing to operate in a safe, sound, and secure manner; thank you for your continued support!

August 17, 2022 | Midwest Loan Services NEW Website beginning August 23, 2022

Midwest Loan Services is launching a new website for our borrowers, and it is called Servicing Digital. Due to the number of questions and concerns Sun East has been getting, Midwest Loan Services put together this Questions and Answers document to explain the basics of this transition.

Will this be replacing our old website?

Yes, this will be replacing the old website, other than a select few clients who have set up SSOs with Midwest, and those will be transferred on a per-client basis.

Do I have to re-register?

Yes, you will have to register on the new website. Since it is new, we will be rebuilding the user database.
